ART-GALLERY (IN-AGAL-IUINA)

Gallery Mission The mission of the Galleries at Herron School of Art and Design is to complement the educational and community outreach goals of the school. The galleries serve as a forum for the evolving dialogue of contemporary art, design and culture and feature work created by regional, national, and international artists and designers. Gallery exhibitions are often coupled with public artist lectures and workshops to foster connections to the regional communities and to support and encourage new and diverse audiences to become engaged with Herron. About The Galleries Herron has three gallery spaces within Eskenazi Hall on New York Street The Berkshire, Reese, and Paul Galleries (approximately 3,000 sq. ft.) host regional, national, and international exhibitions. The Marsh and Basile Galleries (approximately 1,200 sq. ft. and 500 sq. ft. respectively) primarily serve students, faculty and alumni exhibitions and special project installations. The galleries host several endowed lectures and additional programs including film screenings, performances, and panel discussions. Herron has three galleries in Eskenazi Fine Arts Center on Indiana Avenue. Organization Overview Herron School of Art and Design provides professional education in the arts for degree seeking students and offers opportunities for creative exploration for the broader community. Through its distinctive academic programs, unique community collaborations and faculty research and creative activity, Herron continues to expand its role as a leader in the visual arts for the State of Indiana, across the country and throughout the world. Responsibilities Responsible for the maintenance and conservation of artwork and gallery artifacts, including cleaning, reframing, rematting, reglazing, and building housing. Assists with preparation of installation of exhibits and frequently interacts with other Gallery Services staff to determine scheduling, installation needs, and timeline. Assists with collection management efforts and may assist with the installation of large projects, performing inventory, and moving art and gallery artifacts. Makes ongoing technical and spatial adjustments to exhibits after initial installation. Ensures proper condition of artwork and gallery artifacts, escalating issues to appropriate staff as needed. Documents processes; may provide guidance to student or temporary staff. Some travel to and from artist studios, museums, and galleries as required. Attend evening and weekend events as required. Install and de-install exhibitions; hanging artwork. Administrative duties including assisting with artist contracts; exhibition insurance; artwork shipping; travel accommodations for visiting artists; maintain gallery calendars; purchasing goods and services. Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education. Education Required High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED) Preferred Undergraduate degree in Museum and/or Curatorial Studies, Art History, Studio Art, or other related fields with relevant professional experience Work Experience 2 years in related field Skills Required Proficient written and verbal communication skills Maintains a high degree of professionalism Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills Demonstrates a high commitment to quality Possesses flexibility to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment Highly thorough and dependable Preferred Collections management, art handling, exhibition design, and object installation Gallery repair and maintenance Digital/web/design skills This role requires both sedentary work and the ability to move about for long periods of time. It also requires good communication skills and the ability to use tools, operate machinery, and complete construction projects with precision and accuracy. The ability to move heavy objects, provide support for heavy objects and perform strenuous labor is required. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential tasks with or without an accommodation. This position is grant funded for 2 years with expected annual renewals. Renewals beyond 2 years are contingent on the availability of grant funds.
