NYC Parks GreenThumb provides technical assistance, educational workshops, operational support and materials to community gardens throughout New York City. Supporting over 550 community gardens and 20,000 volunteer gardeners, GreenThumb is the largest community gardening program in the country.
Employees who work for 6 months or longer are eligible for healthcare benefits. All seasonal employees earn sick and annual leave. All employees receive free membership to our recreation centers.
Major Responsibilities - Under general supervision, with wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment, support GreenThumb with planning, design, and implementation of community garden improvement projects.
- Engage with community gardeners, stakeholders, partners, and/or contractors to develop and implement community garden site improvements plans through community planning sessions, design charrettes, and other engagement activities.
- Develop partnerships to support physical improvements in community gardens and assist in program development to connect gardeners with resources.
- Develop and implement strategies to coordinate complex projects across teams, divisions, agencies, and external groups.
- Manage a budget, purchase supplies and track inventory and usage of materials.
- Build and maintain working relationships within city government and non-profit community-based organizations.
- Perform research, analyze data and prepare reports related to community gardening and urban agriculture.
Work Location: 100 Gold Street, Manhattan
Duration: September 2025 to June 30, 2026
Fees: Hired candidates will be subject to a processing fee of $85.00. Hired candidates who are not currently employed by the City will be subject to a $101.25 background check fee.

COMMUNITY COORDINATOR - 56058
Minimum Qualifications - A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
- High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
- Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
Preferred Skills - Masters degree in urban planning, landscape architecture or related field, or some advanced training in field related to duties above. 2. Experience or demonstrated interest in community gardening, horticulture, community organizing, urban agriculture or related field. 3. Strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with various audiences. 4. Strong group facilitation skills in use with community workshops and previous experience working with diverse constituencies. 5. Availability to work a flexible work schedule, including events on evenings and weekends, as required. 6. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and work independently or in a team environment as needed. 7. Proficiency with managing multiple assignments with competing deadlines. 8. Second language a plus. 9. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite as well as software like SketchUp and Geographic Information Systems. 10. Valid New York State driver license.

Residency Requirement
Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
